GED Prep classes are available for Conejo Valley Adult School ESL students as they make sufficient progress in our Intermediate High and Advanced ESL classes. Students may enroll in daytime or evening classes.

Conejo Valley Adult School is one of 3400 nationwide Official GED Test Centers.

English As A Second Language (ESL)
 

This program is a sequential series of classes focusing on English conversation, pronunciation, listening, reading, writing, grammar, common errors, American culture and basic civics. Entering students are given a placement exam before being assigned to one of the following classes:

Beginning Literacy (B.), Beginning Low (B.L.), Beginning High (B. H.), Intermediate Low (I.L.), Intermediate High (I.H.), Advanced (A.); Courses in Reading, Writing Pronunciation, and Vocabulary & Idioms. GED Prep in English, Math, Writing and Social Studies.

Intermediate (& higher) Reading Class

This class is designed to help Intermediate and Advanced students with comprehension skills. Emphasis is placed on vocabulary development; comprehension; reading in the content areas; integrating reading and writing; reference and study skills and developing a general interest in reading. Adults are provided with the basic reading skills. The ultimate goal is to help adult students acquire the competencies needed to fulfill their roles as family members, workers and community members.
$5 materials fee due to instructor at first class.

ESL students must have completed Beginning High level.

Citizenship (EL Civics)
This teacher-directed ESL Citizenship class covers the basics of U.S. history, government, and naturalization procedures. It is designed for English learners who are functioning at an Intermediate level or higher in their English proficiency. Students do not need to be ready to apply for naturalization.

Computer Classes

Various computer classes will be offered continually during the semester for all levels of ESL from Beginning Literacy through Advanced. These computer-based ESL classes will include useful software applications.

TOEFL Test Preparation

This is for students preparing to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) to enter an American college. It is open to students in Intermediate High or above.

Registration fee: $50
Text: $50 payable to CVAE in first class.

ESL Pronunciation Class
Need help with pronunciaton? This class is for Beginning High students who need extra help with sounds and pronunciation.

ESL English Vocabulary & Idioms
For ESL Intermediate and higher levels. This course is designed to develop language proficiency in reading, listening, speaking and writing, with special emphasis on vocabulary development. The course introduces high frequency English idioms, fixed expressions and phrasal verbs.
Prerequisite:Completion of Beginning High
