Students then will proceed through specified areas of study and receive individualized instruction, as needed. Attendance days and times are flexible--students may choose their own schedules.

When You Are Ready to Take the GED...
When a student is ready to take the GED, he/she needs to needs to register in the office. For GED registration dates and fees, click here. For For GED I.D. requirements, click here.

If you've taken the GED but still need to pass a portion of it, please read this...

Beginning in 2014, the GED will change from a paper-and-pencil test to a computer-based test (CBT), and important changes will take effect regarding which scores will count from previously administered tests.

Currently, if a student doesn't pass all sections of the GED in on sitting, the student needs to take only the sections failed. The student may combine passing scores on retaken sections with previous passing scores--so long as the original and all subsequent test administrations took place from 2002 on.

However, in 2014, when CBT takes effect, a GED score will not be able to be combined with scores achieved prior to 2014. CBT details.

Gabby Salazar

Gabby Salazar, right, with program coordinator Bette Empol

Gabby Salazar, who has been a student in our ESL program, possesses an inner drive to both improve her life as well as help and encourage others to do the same. Her most recent academic accomplishment, following her enrollment in the GED preparatory English and Math classes sponsored by the ESL program, was that she took the test in February 2011 and passed it with flying colors the first time around. Earning her equivalency certificate was the result of this achievement.

Originally from Michoacan, Mexico, Gabby also spent time living in Mexico City and New Mexico before moving to California in 1997. It was shortly thereafter when she began her journey to the present at Conejo Valley Adult School, taking her first class in computers, in addition to those in English language acquisition, and graduated several years later. With the skills she acquired and the aid of ESL program coordinator Bette Empol (seen hugging Gabby in the photo), she was hired as a buyer for a local welding company, where she has been employed for the past 8-9 years. After learning from a friend about the newly established ESL GED test prep courses, she returned to the Adult School at the program's outset in January 2010.

Success and Failure on the GED
An article on the importance of passing the GED for finding jobs
From The New York Times, Jan. 1, 2011

Nearly 40 million Americans are locked into dead-end jobs because they do not have a high school diploma. A daylong exam called the General Educational Development test, or G.E.D., provides the equivalent of a high school diploma — and better chances in the job market — to those who pass it. Nearly 800,000 people take the exam each year, and about 500,000 pass.

But here is the stunning — and sad — truth about this exam: Success depends heavily on where you live. In Iowa, Kansas and Delaware, 90 percent or more of those who take the test pass. In Alabama, Mississippi, New York and the District of Columbia, less than 60 percent pass.

What accounts for the difference? Preparation. States with low success rates do a poor job of prepping students for the exam. The reverse is true in states with high scores. In Iowa, for example, students take a diagnostic pretest, then receive instruction in their weak areas, then take a practice test. In 2009, 98 percent of those who took the test in Iowa passed the G.E.D. exam.

The test is free in some states and costs as much as $400 in others. Either way, states should make sure people have a legitimate shot at success.

A G.E.D. program developed by New York City's Department of Education may help show New York State — and other states with poor test results — the way forward. The program uses innovative instructional techniques to make sure students are fully prepared.

Over the last several years, the program has a pass rate of about 78 percent, more than 20 percentage points higher than the statewide rate.

The city's program has so impressed the American Council on Education, the nonprofit group that owns the G.E.D., that it will soon begin a pilot program in District 79, which deals with alternative schools and programs. Underwritten by a $3 million grant from the MetLife Foundation, this pilot program is intended to develop a model for educating more adults more quickly so they can pass the G.E.D. and move on with their careers.

These improvements are timely because the G.E.D. test itself is about to get tougher. The new test, to be developed over the next several years, is being revised to conform to more rigorous educational standards proposed earlier this year by the National Governors Association and state school superintendents.

These standards set forth ambitious new goals for what children should learn from kindergarten through high school and have already been embraced by most states. Among other things, they would require students to develop reasoning skills earlier in their educational experience and set higher, college-level standards in math, English and science.

For all these reasons, states — including New York — will need to invest much more heavily in programs that prepare people for the G.E.D. At stake is their economic future — and the country's.

Student Spotlight:
Oscar Rosiles
Oscar Rosiles is an ESL program success story, having passed the GED exam on the very first attempt and, as a result, earning his High School Equivalency Certificate. It was a long road involving many years of study and hard work before arriving at the gateway to his future.
(continues below photo)
Oscar Rosiles
Through the ESL program at the Adult School, he started at Level 2, progressing all the way through Level 5 Advanced. When he learned about the specialized ESL GED Prep classes that were started just last year, he enrolled right away. In addition, Oscar utilized the Literacy Center to improve his conversational and writing skills, and took an ESL Computer course. When he took a GED practice test in advance, he passed the math, which he attributed to his accounting course. He then focused on improving his proficiency in the other subject areas by studying the material on his own.

After taking all of the coursework and passing the GED, a process that took approximately 3 years, Oscar is looking forward to attending Moorpark College, taking general education classes and earning an Associate of Arts degree. His aspirations include a position in the airline industry, possibly as a pilot, or in the field of criminology as a CSI (perhaps inspired by the TV series?).

Writing about his thoughts, feelings and ideas in his journal is a pastime that Oscar enjoys. In line with his interest in criminology, the type of reading material that he is drawn to include the accounts of the criminals that are involved in the activities of drug cartels. He'll also go one step further, pursuing other literature that may be recommended by the author of a book that he's read.

In addition to his parents Francisco and Patricia, Oscar has 3 younger brothers--Fabian, who is in middle school, Mario, a student at Moorpark College, and Francisco, who is married and lives in Mexico.

Oscar attributes his success to the education he received here. "I think that the Adult School has helped me accomplish my goals and helps other students improve their English so they can communicate with other native English speakers." In Oscar's case, his quest to do just that has led him step-by-step on the path toward a bright future, and his achievement serves as an inspiration to his fellow students who are working toward that same goal.

Gabby Salazar
(continued from far left column)

Gabby sees herself working in any type of office job and continuing to acquire new skills for a back-up career. "My teachers have really helped in me to learn and understand the English language, and I'm so thankful that I've had this opportunity," says Gabby. No doubt Gabby's parents living in Mexico, as well as her two brothers who live locally, are very proud of her accomplishments. Through their support and her own motivation, she has tasted success, and through her experiences she hopes to help others achieve their personal best.

In her leisure time, Gabby enjoys outdoor sports--basketball, tennis, swimming, as well as running--both as a spectator and participant. She looks forward to catching some rays at the beach when the weather permits, watching the sunlight dance on the waves. And, as a person of action, Gabby can be seen making her dancing moves, salsa-style. For relaxation from her busy life, getting into a good book involving detective, mystery, or suspense story lines take her away into another place and time, as do magazines, sports and news publications. The rest of the time, Gabby lives in the here and now, with her sights focused straight ahead to a bright, successful future.
