Beginning Calligraphy

Digital Photography
Intro
This workshop will give you the essential skills needed to get started with digital photography. Students will learn about camera controls, shooting modes, file formats, resolution, memory cards, electronic flash, white balance and downloading images to your computer. Additionally, course covers composition, simple enhancement, preparation for email or website, printers, and selecting digital image-editing software. Bring your digital camera and the instruction manual.

This class is for those who have attended Digital Photography Introduction or for those familiar with the camera. This class will place more emphasis on the creative process. Topics will cover visualizing, composing, and designing better photographs. Students will learn to control and see light, both existing and flash. Bring your camera to class.

Crochet for Winter
Learn more about crocheting or refresh your skills. In 8-weeks read and follow patterns with confidence to complete holiday crafts and one-skein wonder projects. Students need 1 skein of worsted weight yarn and a hook (size H or K preferred) on the first day of class, or bring your work-in-progress for further development.

Instructor: Marcia Bucaro learned the craft from her Grandmothers, and has shown and sold her work in Ventura County for many years. She loves teaching and passing on the art of crocheting.

This beginning hands-on class will introduce students to the proper use of basic hand and power tools in a woodshop. An in-class safety test will be required before students begin to work on projects including a pine cutting board (practice) and a quality hardwood cutting board. Students may have time at the end to work on additional projects from home.

Leatherworking
This class will get you started creating beautiful and useful items in leather. You will learn about the different types, weights and grades of leather, leather craft tools, fasteners and closures, carving versus stamping designs, hand sewing, coloring and finishing. You will make a custom leather cellphone case by the end of the class. The skills you learn can be scaled and adapted to make a wide variety of projects.

Instructor: Howard Horwitz is an avid metalworker, woodworker and leatherworker. He specializes in a variety of leather holsters, sheathes, guitar straps, saddle bags, and is excited about passing on this quickly fading art.

Intro to Film Noir:

Femmes Fatales
In this class you will be introduced to Film Noir, meaning Black Film, which was an influential type of film that had its heyday in Hollywood from 1940-1958.  Four classic films will be shown and the basic elements of Film Noir will be discussed: the visual style, the type of story, the characters, and the mood. For those that joined us previously, this class features new titles.

Instructor: Joseph Longo has a Master’s degree in Mass Communications, has taught college-level film and literature courses, and has written about film.  He also worked as a film researcher for the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Visual Language, Composition & Breaking Rules Discussion, Field & Image Review… join in a 5 week class of compositional and artistic theory, in the field shooting, and image review to help you make images you love. We will shoot in Manual Mode (not on auto) so Intro to Digital Photography or Get to Know Your Camera are prerequisites. This class will involve some gentle hiking. Bring your DSLR camera (one with interchangeable lenses) and your creative energy!
