Introduction to Backgammon

Learn to play one of the oldest and most exciting games in the world in this fun course intended for players with little or no previous experience. Because of the combination of luck and skill involved this game is fun all levels. In 6 weeks we will cover everything one needs to know to play at an intermediate level through hands on learning and a focus on strategy. Bring your favorite board, or use the instructor’s.

Beginning Poker: No Limit Hold Em

Learn the rules, lingo and strategy of Texas Hold Em. Learn how to run your own home tournament with friends or play at casino poker rooms. Each class will start with a lesson, then break into a mini-poker game so you can practice your new skills.

Instructor: Kate Henderson has been playing poker around the family dining room table since she was a kid. Now a mom, she has won tens of thousands of dollars playing in home games, online, and in Las Vegas.

General Woodworking
A hands-on class for all ability levels using a variety of hand and power tools. Beginning and Advanced students will have the opportunity for one-on-one instruction. The class can include fine furniture making and finishing. An in-class safety test and competency project will be required before students begin to work on their own projects.

Instructor: Daniel Bell teaches in the local district and is a member of the Conejo Valley Woodworkers Association. He’s the owner of Daniel Bell Construction.

Weaving

Learn to make looms in various shapes and sizes and weave in different ways with different materials such as fabric, yard, string and glass beads. Students will build their own looms from everyday materials such as hula hoops, pvc pipes, cardboard and embroidery hoops. At the end of the course students will end up with a variety of weaved pieces ready to be displayed.

Instructor: Helle Rasmussen is practiced in the arts of mosaic, sculpture, weaving, and mural painting and has instructed in a variety of teaching settings.

Mosaic Series

Make decorative garden and patio ornaments with mosaic. Work on river rocks, pavers, bricks and create cement garden mushrooms that will be decorated with glass and ceramic mosaics. Students will learn how to break glass, tile and ceramics safely to make appropriate sizes for their artwork, and are welcome to bring their own materials such as chipped china, glass beads, old ceramics and tiles to add a personal touch.

Creative Art Journaling

Through stimulating creative writing, drawing and mixed media art exercises we will begin the process of journaling. Find your unique voice, get inspired, learn a multitude of techniques with various media including collage, image transfer, stenciling and creating texture. You will be able to take what you learn home with you and continue the process. Please bring journal/drawing pad with blank pages to first class.

Instructor: Elisabeth Arena is an experienced instructor who has an MFA from Radford University and a BFA from Tufts University.

Get to Know Your Camera

Make friends with your camera and its lenses to take better pictures! Let’s face it, digital SLR cameras can be intimidating. There are so many buttons and dials, and that manual is a novella! Learn the basics about shutter speed, aperture and ISO and how they work magic in your camera to produce images. Easy techniques to photograph flowers, landscape and outdoor portraits will be presented. Bring your DSLR camera (one with interchangeable lenses), camera manual, and any lenses you may have.

Experimental & Collage Art

Inspiring new techniques will help you discover the artist within you. This is a fun class for beginners and advanced artists alike. Explore mixed media on watercolor paperor canvas with inks, acrylics, gesso and more. We will also use a wide variety of materials such as rice paper, foils, beads, yarn and many more. Materials furnished for the first class with supply list provided for following projects.

Beginning Italic
Come explore the broad edged pen and learn to create beautiful Italic letterforms. This course will introduce the beginner to this classic style of calligraphy with step by step instruction. You’ll use Italic for a variety of creative projects for weddings, greeting cards, envelopes and pieces of art. Funtangle
The class is based on the Zentangle art form. Its many benefits range from stress reduction to problem solving!!! Funtangle is easy to learn and comprised of repetitive structured patterns that create beautiful images. This class will work with pencil, ink, watercolor, glitter and more to make designs for greeting cards and for framing. Basic materials provided.

Instructor: Joan Hawks earned a BA in Art from UCLA. With the Society for Calligraphy, she has specialized in both commercial and fine art. She teaches workshops and has had articles published in national and international magazines.

Art Appreciation
This course examines art history from the artists’ perspective. We will delve into hidden symbolism and imagery discovered in the Sistine Chapel, and the intimate life of Leonardo Da Vinci and his pupils. We will explore the California Regional painters and their influence during post WW1 era and the Great Depression. Other fascinating topics include Women in the Arts from Baroque to Rococo, artists copying artists, artists copying from photos and devices used in Contemporary Art.

Instructor: Peter Kraus is an established graphic designer, author and artist with more than 35 years experience. He has a BA in Art Education and has studied extensively with Master Saul Bernstein. Fun with Ceramics
The art of ceramics will be explored in this fun hands-on class. Projects will include creating a platter, a vase, and a detail piece decorated with mosaic painting, vinegar painting and black magic techniques. All supplies will be provided.

Instructor: Susan Clarke is an award winning teacher who works in pottery and sculpture, and owned her own ceramics business. Debbie Selznick is a talented artist with 20 years of experience in ceramics.
