Phlebotomy Technician
& Medical Laboratory Assistant

To get your full Phlebotomy Certification you must pass both the Basic and Advanced portions of the program, complete a Phlebotomy Externship ($100 fee) and pass the NCCT* National exam ($90 fee). Requirements for Phlebotomy certification: 18 years old; High school diploma or High School Equivalency (HiSET or GED); BLS CPR; proof of immunization titers and TB test (given within the last 3 months). Both tests can be administered at Waverly Wellness Center on campus. Details given at first day of class. *NCCT stands for National Center for Competency Testing.

.Basic Phlebotomy.............................................................6 Weeks
This is the first step toward your full National Phlebotomy Certification; it provides the 20 hours of beginning didactic classroom instruction required by the State of California Health Service.
Coursework includes:
• Circulatory system
• OSHA regulations
• Finger puncture techniques
• Venipuncture with vacutainer
• Making blood slides
• Handling and collecting common lab specimens

.Advanced Phlebotomy...................................................5 Weeks
This class has been approved by the State of California Health Service to provide the minimum 20 hours of Advanced didactic classroom instruction required for Phlebotomy Certification. Upon successful completion of the Basic class, Advanced class and Externship, students may be eligible to sit for the NCCT Exam to receive their National Certification ($90 test fee).

This workshop provides a great opportunity for you to brush up on your Phlebotomy skills! For all eligible students who are currently enrolled in any of our Basic Phlebotomy classes OR anyone who has already completed a Basic Phlebotomy class. Limited enrollment.

• Troubleshooting difficult collection sites
• Specimen preparation for outreach laboratories
• Microscope handling
• Point-of-Care Testing (POCT)
• Chain of Custody Tests
• Specimen handling, processing, and storage
• Blood smear preparation
• CLIA-waived testing
• Identifying and eliminating pre-analytical errors
• Ensuring Quality Control & Quality Assurance
