Mr. Bernie Carr has worked in the Conejo Valley since 1971. Before becoming a school administrator, Mr. Carr taught at various levels for six years. Mr. Carr first served as a 5th-6th grade teacher at Banyan Elementary School from 1971 through 1974, then taught 7th and 8th grade social studies and math at Los Cerritos Middle School from 1974 through 1977. During that time Mr. Carr also tutored students, coached track, worked summer school programs and earned his Masters of Arts Degree in Education Administration and Administrative Services Credential from California Lutheran University.
Mr. Carr began his administrative career as Assistant Principal at E.O. Green Middle school in the Hueneme School District from 1977-79. Mr. Carr returned to the Conejo Valley Unified School District in 1979 and served as principal at Wildwood Elementary ('79-'84), Maple Elementary ('84-'86), Los Cerritos Middle ('86-'91), Westlake Elementary ('93-'01), Weathersfield Elementary ('01-'06) and Conejo Valley Adult Education ('06-'09).
From 1991 through 1993 Mr. Carr took a leave of absence from the Conejo and worked for the Kentucky Department of Education, serving as the Director of the Division of School Based Decision Making, helping schools throughout the state to form school site councils and take part in a decentralized approach to school governance. School Based Decision Making was a central component of Kentucky's historic legislatively mandated Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA).
Mr. Carr retired from his position as principal of the Adult School in January of 2009 and since that time has worked part time as an assistant principal. Currently Mr. Carr works Monday evenings and Tuesday mornings.
Mr. Carr has been recognized numerous times by local PTSA's through their Honorary Service Award and Continuing Service Award. Mr. Carr has also been recognized as "Principal of the Year" by the Kiwanis Club and holds the title of "Honorary Kentucky Colonel" for his work with the Kentucky Department of Education.
Mr. Carr has been married to Christine since 1970 . They have four grown sons—Tim, Michael, Wade and Tyler— daughter-in-law Beth, and granddaughters Grace and Addison.
Mr. Carr plays golf, works on home improvement projects, exercises and treasures the time he has with his family. |
