Melissa Nickles started her teaching career in Northern California. Although she began working at the secondary level, she became intrigued by the program and philosophy of a small, private school and accepted a Kindergarten teaching position where academics were stressed and enrichments like French, art and music were emphasized.
Several years later, with young children at home, Melissa opted to teach a high school English class in the evenings. As her children became settled in school, Melissa began substitute teaching at a variety of elementary and high schools in the area as well as at several private schools. During this time as well, Melissa was asked to teach a preschool class while simultaneously being on the Board of Directors of Women’s Ministries and a Director of Elementary Children’s Programs at her church.
Having now worked at Conejo Valley Adult School for over twenty years, Melissa has had a variety of positions. She has taught English as a Second Language, Citizenship, Independent Study, teacher-directed classes for high school and adult diploma students, and she continues to be the Chief Examiner for GED testing. Melissa is currently working in the Learning Center at the adult school where she is the Coordinator of the High School Diploma and General Education Development programs.
Though Melissa never would have imagined having such a lengthy tenure at Conejo Valley Adult School, the variety of positions she has held over the years, as well as the gradual change from part-time to full-time work, always afforded her the opportunity to be a stay-at-home mom…her number one priority. Melissa looks forward to continuing her work with high school and adult-age students, helping them to recognize that “although no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand, new ending.” |
